The buying power of African-Americans continues to grow, but advertisers are missing the mark by passing over black-oriented media. That is the conclusion of a Nielsen report, which shows that of the $75 billion spent last year in the U.S. on television, magazines, Internet and radio advertising, less than 3 percent went to media focused on black audiences.

Like much of the history of South Carolina's black community, stories of the 1st S.C. Volunteers -- the first official black regiment of the Union Army -- have been largely by word of mouth.

It is with extreme sadness that I inform The Chess Drum readership of the death of FM Ronald Simpson. He succumbed to Stage Four cancer on Thursday, September 19th. Simpson was an active member of the North Carolina community after being a legendary figure in New York’s “Black Bear School of Chess” for many years. Ron’s last USCF rating was 2338 and last tournament was the Asheboro Open in July…which he won. 

Even if they come from affluent families or attend highly rated schools, black students in Ohio continue to lag far behind their white peers in school, according to a Dispatch analysis of data from state standardized exams. On more than two dozen state tests given to students in kindergarten through high school last year, the average passage rate among black students was 64 percent. On average, 87 percent of white students passed. Disparities between races have existed across the country since schools were physically divided by race, researchers say, but many now view those gaps largely as a product of high poverty among minorities.

Bill Siegel,...skillfully directs “The Trials of Muhammad Ali.” In terms of archival footage Siegel has an embarrassment of reel riches to choose from. The director, a researcher for the 1994 Oscar-nominated doc “Hoop Dreams,” selects wisely and edits a knockout.

Highlights include the doc’s opening, with a black and white clip of talk show host David Susskind, the archetypal liberal, delivering an excoriating televised verbal assault on Ali during his draft trials and tribulations that is even more vituperative than segregationist Georgia Gov. Lester Maddox’s later remarks. On the other hand, there is a color clip of neocon George W. Bush awarding the athlete the Medal of Freedom in a 2005 White House ceremony. There is much footage of Malcolm X -- before and after his split from the NOI. In other shots, Ali the separatist hugs Martin Luther King and calls the integrationist “brother;” in another clip Dr. King calls on all young men to do as Ali did by filing for C.O. status and lauding his “courage” for refusing to fight in Vietnam. A laughing Coretta Scott King later tells Ali he is “our champion in boxing and in justice.”

We also hear from Stokely Carmichael and H. Rap Brown along with famous African American sports figures. Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain and John Carlos, who made a gloved Black power salute during the 1968 Olympics awards ceremony in Mexico, support Ali, while ex-heavyweight champ Joe Louis and baseball’s racial trendsetter Jackie Robinson (who similarly betrayed Paul Robeson in the 1950s) oppose him. Meanwhile, the recently deceased talk show great David Frost takes the blustery Ali to task for calling all white people “devils.”

The 30 minutes of REW-FFWD are introduced as the content of a “black box,” the video record of a nameless photojournalist’s trip to Jamaica,....

The journalist is sent to Trench Town, Kingston by an ignorant and somewhat racist editor who wants a “Heart of Darkness” story on what he assumes is a violent, barbaric island nation. When the journalist finally arrives, his car breaks down and he is forced to stay with the actually warm and helpful locals until the local mechanic can fix it.

When you get a good look at it, that “Heart of Darkness” is pretty amazing:

The black man occupies a unique space in American culture. He is an aggressive and inherently violent threat to society. In fact, at a recent fellowship dinner at Columbia Law School, a wealthy, white businessman told me that the biggest business problem occurring in America is the inability of black women to find [black] husbands. He declared that this travesty is rooted in the black man’s inability to commit, not just to a woman, but also to a job. Upon picking my jaw off the floor, I concluded three important things: (1) my supposedly personal decisions regarding who I choose to fuck or date or marry are very much political, (2) so long as I date black men, I will carry their burden, and (3) while my decision to primarily date black men is a conscious one, it is not necessarily simple.

  As a racially ambiguous woman, I have the privilege of changing the way society receives me at my discretion. Sometimes I am black, other times I am Indian or Latina, or I may be French, or just a white girl who tans a bit too much. Sometimes I am intimidating or a race-baiting Angry Black Woman, but I can just as easily morph into innocent and approachable.  Over time I’ve found that the easiest way to change my ethnicity – change the way people treat me – is to change my company.  And the company that most defines us is, in fact, our choice in a mate. When I choose to date a black man, I inevitably send a message to society about who I am and what I represent. When I choose to date a black man, I choose to be ignored at bars, barred from clubs, humiliated by groups of drunken white men, or passed over by taxis. I choose to internalize their experiences of undervaluation, passed over promotions and emasculation. I choose to carry the burden of [dating] black men, and I choose it often; 90% of the men I’ve dated are black.

Why's There A Gay Parade - But Never A Black One?

 

Catchy title, huh? Yeah. I was going to try something with those two terms of endearment - Race Hustler and Victim Schtick - but gays, always saying we're the same, bother me. Where's the black fucking parade?

Never heard a white person ask that. Humph.

So, the fear is, the movie 12 Years A Slave might cause problems. I don't know why. 

It's just the kind of story black households live with, as personal history, and discuss - can the rest of the country deal? 

I don't know. 

I wonder if whites understand there are entire black families still licking their wounds - or do they think we wake up each morning thinking this is a wonderful land of opportunity and we better go get it? I don't know. 

If they're not denying slavery happened fairly recently in the life of blacks, then some whites are trying to deny it's had any affect on blacks as a people - like a family intimately understanding rape and other horrible crimes, along with toiling for free for centuries, can't do that. 

If some whites can't sell that idea, they just don't like you. 

Whites will listen to complete idiots before they contemplate someone else might have a clue. Sorry, folks, I've seen it and lived it. Considering how many idiot whites there are, that's a long-assed line I've had to wait in and, usually, it's too long to get to me today. Well, at least I had the "opportunity," right? Is that how it works? Oh joy. 

Right now, some whites like to rail about black-on-black crime, but are they going to consider that partial fall-out from white slave owners forcing blacks to "punish" each other? I don't know that either. They do love them some black-on-black crime, though. They never talk about white-on-white crime - which is the majority of crime, just based on volume. Maybe that's because white-on-white crime is just "crime". Isn't that strange? 

There's a lot I don't know because, with some whites, there's no way to imagine they share the same country. I'm expected to be open and honest, but they can't even acknowledge outnumbering me, and doing so by such a wide margin I can be driven mad by hearing the same lame racial jokes, the same lame racial arguments, and the same lame denials of every word I say, over and over and over again. Usually in a single day, online. "Thinking outside the box" is just a phrase to these people. They have no intention of trying it.

And there's nothing I can do about it - they hold all the cards. All they have to do is not to like what I'm saying, agree on that, and I'm done - right or wrong don't matter. Do they understand that? I don't know. They've rarely backed me up when I'm right (ask Ann You're-all-losers Althouse or Glenn I-like-quackery Reynolds) but demand friendship I rarely feel.  Not sure how that's supposed to work.

Did you know most of my donations come from people I rarely talk to? The ones I do, they don't have time - too busy writing "the narrative" of my life to be bothered with the real thing.

I can be affected by how white people are so concerned by white's opinions to the exclusion of everyone else's. Do they consider that? I don't know. I doubt most whites have been in that situation very often. Where blacks, as a group, can simply ignore them.

What do you guys think Dave Chappelle has been grappling with - why he had to pass on $50 million and run to Africa? (Wasn't he your buddy, playing a blind Klansman shouting "Nigger!") Do you think he was wondering how great being in this situation is - even with money? Are YOU in a "situation" just by waking up today? Are YOU writing a racial post for understanding? Nope. You're sitting there deciding.

I've got a white guy caring for me now - he's manic/depressive and barks "Nigger!" several times a day. Are you relying on such help? Could you handle a black guy in your house yelling "Cracker!" or "Honky!" uncontrollably? I bet you couldn't. Nor would you, and never will have to - but we're all the same, started from the same place, "living the dream," with the same chances in life, right? Please stop the bullshit.

I think you're great, too but, as rude as it is, let me begin by answering your question with a question: 

Why was it so important to this country (and other blacks, especially) that we have a "first black" president?

Because we all understood the history of our home. Hell, I wanted nothing to do with Barack Obama, but even I knew the score. (Rather than the sweep of history unfolding, the Obama cult was going to "make" it in an Easy Bake Oven, and anybody who didn't like it was going to have to eat it.) And all because of a past we're trying hard to ignore.

Even me. I went for years without writing about race as I am now. And I was praised for it by the same people who, later, still pushed me into doing it. Forced to choose. But it's like the conservative take on Obama and Syria - I know it's mostly bullshit, but they're making it real. A self-fulfilling prophecy.

I don't like it, but I've accepted it. Cognitive dissonance, here I come! Conservatives have demanded it. Even Thomas Sowell would do the same thing, I'm sure. Especially in my current situation. You want to be in the streets and have a problem with black history? Good luck.

And what says a half-African dude, raised by a half-crazy white American leftist, is somehow going to miss out on The Black American Experience that, even I say, trails from Africa and the beginning of time to right here-and-now? I mean, tell me if I missed something, but isn't the fact of Obama's bizarre heritage (African/American, white/black, seller/buyer, subject/object) part of the hope he supposedly embodied - that a person, infused with some of the details that produced our troubles, could possibly end them?

I said from the beginning he was the wrong guy, and knew I was right when he started repeatedly flipping the bird to whites on the campaign trail, making it obvious - and making it obvious the media was white and liberal and timid. Even conservatives were cowed. Afraid to show outrage. All because of a past that shall not be named.

Guys, even trying to escape the subject of slavery still means it has a hold on us. People without it, in their past or present, don't have to do that. They're observers, not another weirdly-spotted family member, showing up at the door with something to discuss. Like who's "Dad"?

I personally find it maddening, because it's like we've been cursed. Being a young country (something we don't consider a lot as we bellow) we're close to the past, almost without knowing it. 500 years ago is yesterday in Europe, but it's generally outside of the entirety of America's scope. Unless you include indigenous people as having history. And the blacks I know certainly think of themselves as indigenous. As having history. Somebody just took an eraser to part of it on the blackboard.

The rest of it - as even Martin Luther King explained - is about us kids finding our way. There's just one little problem, and only I take it seriously. There's this little thing called the NewAge, and in it - unless they have a gun to their heads - they no likey leaders so much.
